Queensland's Rules Are Stricter Than Most States
Queensland places a lower limit on single-phase EV charging load than the eastern states do. Chargers above the threshold require notification to Energex before energisation and generally require active demand management to be permitted.
Your electrician lodges the Electrical Work Request and obtains approval where it is needed. This is not a formality that can be skipped, and an unnotified installation is non-compliant regardless of whether the charger works.
Three-phase installations, where a property has three-phase available, change the picture considerably and are usually the better outcome where the supply already exists.

1. How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?
EV charger installation cost depends on the charger you choose, the distance from your switchboard to the parking spot, your switchboard’s capacity, and whether cabling runs are simple or complex.

2. Can I just plug my EV into a normal power point?
You can, but it’s slow and not ideal long-term. A standard 10-amp outlet trickle-charges an EV very slowly and wasn’t designed for the sustained high load of daily charging, which can stress old wiring.
A dedicated wall charger on its own circuit charges far faster and safer. We’ll advise the right option for your car, driving habits and switchboard.
3. Do I need a special circuit or switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Often, yes. EV chargers draw a significant, sustained load, so they’re installed on a dedicated circuit – and if your switchboard is older or already near capacity, it may need upgrading or a load assessment first.
