Why Currumbin Waters Calls Knight Electrical Solutions

Currumbin Waters is the quieter, more suburban side of Currumbin, mostly family homes built from the seventies and eighties onward. Which means the calls here follow a pattern: breakers tripping as the house gets busier, no safety switches on older circuits, and a switchboard nobody has looked at since it went in.

We check what is actually there, price it on site before starting, and back the work for its life rather than the usual twelve months. Licensed electricians on QLD licence 1511406, fully insured, with more than twenty years behind them.

Based just down the road – Currumbin Waters is a short run for us and same-day bookings are often available. If it is urgent, we answer call-outs 24 hours a day.

What we find in Currumbin Waters homes

Four things worth checking at your place. Sources for every claim sit underneath it.

Before the patio or carport goes up

Build too close to the line and you pay to move the network, not just the patio

Roofed outdoor areas, carports, sheds and pool surrounds are the most common additions on blocks like these, and the overhead line across the yard is the thing nobody prices in. Energex sets minimum clearances between its network and anything you build, and they vary by voltage and by what the structure is — an unroofed terrace under a low-voltage insulated line, for example, needs 2.7 m vertically or 1.2 m horizontally. The part that costs money is the obligation. If what you are building is likely to come within those clearances, Energex’s position is that “before the works starts, you have an obligation to notify us under the Regulations.” Skip it and the conversation happens afterwards instead: Energex contacts the owner to resolve the issue, or to pay for a change to the nearby network to make it safe, which it describes plainly as “often a significant cost.” Builders do not always raise this and it is not their liability. Before you finalise the plan, measure from the line, not from the fence.

If you have solar and weather is coming

Your solar does not switch off when you throw the main switch

This is the one that surprises people, and it matters more here than in most suburbs because the low-lying blocks are the ones that lose power and take water. A rooftop array generates whenever there is daylight on it, regardless of what the switchboard is doing, which is why the Electrical Safety Office’s storm advice is not “turn the power off” but “shut down your solar PV system using the safe isolation procedure” — a specific sequence, usually documented on or near the inverter, that most owners have never been shown. The same advice is worth reading in full before storm season rather than during it: know where to turn off power, gas and water; switch off and unplug equipment as a storm approaches; and if flood waters are expected, “move electrical equipment to higher locations.” The two-minute version: go and look at your inverter now, find the isolation instructions, and photograph them. Reading a procedure by torchlight in the rain is not the moment to learn it.

After water gets in

Nothing goes back on until it has been tested, and you should get that in writing

The instinct after water recedes is to check whether things still work. That is the wrong order. The Electrical Safety Office is direct about the first step: stay away from and do not touch switchboards damaged by water. What comes next is a job with a defined standard behind it — WorkSafe Queensland’s requirements for disaster-affected work are to inspect and test the equipment and installation to confirm it is electrically safe before it is re-energised, to issue a comprehensive certificate of test to the customer, and not to work on equipment that is submerged or has recently been submerged. That certificate is what an insurer will ask you for, so keep it with the claim rather than the job file. Separately, the line between repair and replacement is drawn for you: water-affected small appliances like kettles, toasters and televisions get disposed of or repaired by a licensed electrician, and hard-wired items intended for re-use — air conditioning, stoves — have to be checked by one before they go back into service.

When the meter gets swapped

You have two years before anyone can move you onto a new tariff

Meter replacements are running across older streets right now and most people treat it as a non-event. The Australian Energy Market Commission’s final rule sets a target of universal smart meter deployment across the National Electricity Market by 2030, implemented progressively from December 2024 to July 2026, with the accelerated rollout starting in December 2025. Two customer protections came with it and they are the reason to pay attention. There are no upfront costs ahead of a smart meter installation. And for two years after one is installed, you cannot be moved to a new tariff without giving explicit informed consent — after which a retailer wanting to change your tariff has to show you historical bill comparisons of what your bills would have been under the new one. If a call or letter follows your meter swap asking you to agree to a “better” plan, that is the window it is aimed at. Ask for the comparison in writing before you agree to anything.

Byron Knight, owner and licensed electrician at Knight Electrical Solutions

Meet the electrician

Byron Knight has spent 20+ years wiring things up in more places than most people could point to on a map: FIFO mining camps, private jets, job sites across New Zealand, and now switchboards across the southern Gold Coast. QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 1511406, and all of it still comes back to the same basic job: making sure your power works and your house doesn’t catch fire.

When he’s not under a house or up on a roof, he’s usually chasing a wave or three coffees deep before most people are out of bed, which might explain the early starts. That standard is the one every job we take on gets held to.

“Do it once, do it right” isn’t just a tagline. I’m not interested in being back at your place in six months for the same problem.– Byron

The price is agreed before the job starts and nothing extra turns up on the invoice afterwards. Every job comes with a lifetime workmanship warranty instead of the usual 12 months, and we’re available around the clock for genuine emergencies across Currumbin Waters and the southern Gold Coast.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can an electrician get to Currumbin Waters?
Currumbin Waters is within our core Gold Coast service area, so standard bookings are usually actioned same-day, and genuine emergencies like power loss or burning smells are prioritised first. Call 0421 333 034 to check today’s availability.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency electrician call-outs in Currumbin Waters?
Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency electrician call-outs across Currumbin Waters for genuine urgent issues: power loss, sparking outlets, burning smells, or exposed wiring. Standard trading hours apply for scheduled, non-urgent work. Call 0421 333 034 any time to report an emergency.
What electrical issues are common in older Currumbin Waters homes?
Many Currumbin Waters homes built in the 1970s–90s still run original switchboards not designed for modern air conditioning, EV chargers or full appliance loads. Tripping breakers, no safety switches, and outdated wiring are the most common calls we get in this suburb.
Does living on the water affect electrical work in Currumbin Waters?
Yes. Humidity and moisture off the canals accelerate corrosion in outdoor power points, switchboards and light fittings, especially around pools, pontoons and outdoor entertaining areas. We use corrosion-resistant fittings where appropriate and can inspect older outdoor installations for early signs of damage. Low-lying blocks also need a plan for water getting in: anything water-damaged has to be inspected and tested before it’s re-energised, not just switched back on.
Do you handle electrical maintenance for waterfront body corporates in Currumbin Waters?
Yes. We work with body corporates and strata managers for waterfront and canal-estate properties around Currumbin Waters, including common-area lighting, power, and compliance testing, quoted on a fixed-price basis. Around a quarter of dwellings here are townhouses or duplexes, so this is a bigger part of the work than the canal frontage suggests.
How does your pricing work?
We confirm the price on site before starting any work, so you know the cost upfront rather than watching an hourly rate tick over. Once we’ve agreed the price, that’s the price. Payment happens on the spot once the job’s done, via portable EFTPOS.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We hold QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 1511406 and full insurance. Every job also comes with a lifetime workmanship warranty rather than the usual 12-month term.
What are the QLD smoke alarm rules for Currumbin Waters properties?
Queensland’s smoke alarm reforms are being phased in by the Queensland Fire Department. Since 1 January 2022 the current standard has applied to any dwelling being sold, leased or re-leased, and from 1 January 2027 it applies to all remaining Queensland dwellings. The standard requires photoelectric, interconnected alarms in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling, and on every storey. Alarms older than 10 years, or any that fail when tested, must be replaced. With around a fifth of homes here rented, the 2022 date is the live one for a lot of owners rather than 2027. We supply and install compliant systems and can advise on your property’s exact requirements.

Disclaimer & sources

The local data in the “What we find in Currumbin Waters homes” section is drawn from the third-party sources cited on each card and was last reviewed in September 2026. Those figures belong to the cited sources, not to Knight Electrical Solutions, and we do not claim to have collected them ourselves.

Census figures are Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 Census data for the Currumbin Waters suburb (SAL) area, SAL30776. They describe the suburb as a whole and say nothing about any individual property, including whether it fronts the water.

Clearance requirements and the obligation to notify before building reflect information published by Energex as at September 2026. The example clearance quoted applies to an unroofed terrace near a low-voltage insulated powerline; required clearances vary by voltage, by line type and by what is being built, and only Energex can confirm what applies at your address.

Storm and flood guidance reflects material published by the Electrical Safety Office Queensland. Solar isolation procedures are specific to the system installed at each property, and the documented procedure for your inverter takes precedence over any general description here.

Requirements for inspecting, testing and certifying disaster-affected electrical installations reflect material published by WorkSafe Queensland as at September 2026. Whether an insurer accepts a certificate, and what a policy requires, is a matter for the insurer.

Smart meter rollout dates and customer protections reflect the final rule determination published by the Australian Energy Market Commission. Tariffs, meter installation and retailer conduct are matters between you, your retailer and the distributor, not matters we are party to. Energy rules change, and the AEMC and your retailer are the right sources for your own situation.

Statements about Queensland smoke alarm obligations reflect the phased requirements published by the Queensland Fire Department as at September 2026. They are general information, not legal advice about your property, sale or tenancy.

Each card above combines published third-party data with Knight Electrical Solutions’ own professional interpretation of what that data tends to mean for electrical work in this suburb. The figures belong to the sources cited on each card. The conclusions we draw from them are our opinion, and are not claims made by those sources.
