Newer than you’d think — which changes what’s actually wrong with it

Merrimac was dairy country from the 1870s, after the Stephens family drained the swamp to farm it, and Queensland Places records the suburb as still “rural/residential subdivisions, horse paddocks and plant nurseries” through the 2000s — two decades after neighbouring Carrara had been built out. The estates and townhouse complexes came late. That inverts the usual advice for a Gold Coast suburb. Ceramic fuses and rewirable fuse wire are rare here, and most boards already have RCDs on them. But an RCD installed in the mid-2000s is now around twenty years old, and that’s the point: they are mechanical devices that can fail without giving any sign, and the only way to know is to trip one deliberately. The work in Merrimac is usually testing and adding capacity, not replacing a relic.
