When the power drops for no reason

In this part of the coast the fault is often an animal, and it is not your electrician’s job

Currumbin sits between a wildlife sanctuary and a tidal creek, and the local birdlife does not read network diagrams. Energex told the ABC that 445 electricity outages across Queensland in 2021 were caused by wildlife getting caught on powerlines or in transformers, with possums and birds the most common culprits and everything from frogs to snakes turning up. Energex designs around it — wildlife guards on poles, greater separation between conductors, bundled insulated aerial cable, and reflective bird-proofing disks near wetlands, which is exactly the kind of country you get either side of Currumbin Creek. Two things follow. First, if your power goes and the street is out with you, an electrician is the wrong call and a wasted fee. Second, if you find an animal caught in the network, you report it rather than approach it: Energex on 13 12 53 in business hours or 13 62 62 after hours, and the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL for an injured animal. Nothing about a wire with a possum on it is safe to sort out yourself.

The one nobody expects from an electrician

A child a month, and it is not the power point

People childproof the power points and stop there. The Electrical Safety Office’s own figure for the hazard that actually lands children in hospital is blunt: in Australia “one child a month is seriously injured after swallowing or inserting a button battery”, and the ESO notes that around two in every five Queensland households have children living in them. Button cells are in more of the house than most people picture — remote controls, car key fobs, bathroom scales, kitchen thermometers, reading lights, novelty toys, and the small devices that pile up in a holiday place between visits. The injury is chemical rather than electrical, it happens fast, and the battery does not have to be new to do it. So the check is a walk around with a screwdriver: anything holding a button cell should have a compartment that needs a tool or a deliberate two-step to open, flat batteries go straight out of the house rather than into a drawer, and spares live somewhere a child cannot reach. This is not electrical work. It is the thing the Electrical Safety Office leads with, so we pass it on.

Anything you run near the creek

The rule is written around pools, and it does not stop at the pool fence

Most advice about electricity and water is aimed at swimming pools, so people with a creek at the back fence assume none of it is theirs. Read the Electrical Safety Office’s wording: take extreme care when using electrical appliances or equipment near “a swimming pool, pond, water feature, dam or creek”. Creek is in the list. What follows is short and worth taking literally — never use extension leads, appliances or cords near the water, keep them out of it entirely, and only use electrical equipment through a safety switch. The pressure washer on the bank, the work light for a night job on the boat, the pump you borrowed, the lead run down the side of the house to whatever you are doing at the water: all of it sits inside that sentence. The other line people miss is about ongoing responsibility rather than installation — a licensed electrician must install and maintain your pool wiring and equipment. Signed off once, eight years ago, is not maintained.

When someone invokes your insurer

Nobody quoting you a job can tell you what your insurer will do

It is a common closing line in this trade, and you should treat it as a sales tactic rather than information: get this done or your insurance will not pay. No contractor has read your policy, and the outcome of a claim turns on the policy wording, the cause of the loss and the insurer’s own assessment. What can be stated plainly is the law, which is a different thing. In Queensland, safety switches have been compulsory on all general-purpose socket-outlet circuits in new homes since 1992, and on power point and lighting circuits in new homes since 2000. Older stock predates both, which is the real reason a beachside house with a lot of outdoor circuits often has protection on some of them and nothing on the rest. That is a safety argument and it stands on its own merits. If you want to know where your cover actually sits, the person to ask is your insurer or broker, in writing, before the work rather than after the fault.
