Fittings Suited To The Environment They're Going Into:

Salt air is not a minor consideration between Palm Beach and Coolangatta. It gets into fixings, corrodes housings from the inside, and kills a cheap floodlight in a season.

We specify IP-rated fittings appropriate to the exposure (sheltered eaves and fully weather-exposed positions are not the same problem), use marine-grade stainless fixings where the position warrants it, and seal entries properly so water is not tracking back into the fitting.

Outdoor circuits are RCD protected and any underground runs are installed with the burial depth and mechanical protection AS/NZS 3000 requires, which is the part that gets skipped when a fitting goes in without a licensed electrician.

1. Where should security lights actually go?

Cover the approaches rather than the house itself. The most useful positions are the side paths, the back corners nobody overlooks, and anywhere someone could work on a door or window unseen. A single floodlight over the back door lights the one spot people are least likely to approach from, and leaves the rest of the yard darker by contrast.

2. Do sensor lights actually deter break-ins?

They help, though not on their own. Most break-ins are opportunistic, and a light coming on removes the assumption that nobody’s watching. What matters more than brightness is coverage – a well-lit approach with a dark side path just moves the problem. Worth thinking of as one layer rather than the answer.

3. Sensor or switched?

Sensors for security, switched or timed for everything else. Sensors are the right call on approaches and side paths where you want a response to movement. For a deck or entertaining area, a sensor cutting out mid-conversation is annoying, so those are better switched, on a timer, or both. Most properties end up with a mix.

4. My sensor light keeps coming on for nothing. Can that be fixed?

Usually yes. False triggering is normally the sensor’s range or angle picking up a road, a tree moving, or heat off a roof or driveway. Adjusting the sensitivity and aim fixes most of it. Where the position itself is wrong, relocating the fitting is a small job and solves it properly.

5. Can I light my deck without lighting the whole yard?

Yes, and it’s usually the better result. Step lights, lighting under a handrail, or low fittings in the garden edge give you enough to move around and eat by without flooding the space. Downlights in a pergola roof work well for a dining area. The layout matters more than the number of fittings.

6. How long do outdoor lights last on the Gold Coast?

Less than they should, if the fittings aren’t rated for it. Salt air corrodes fixings, gets into housings and shortens the life of anything not specified for coastal exposure, and properties within a few kilometres of the water get it worst. Fittings rated for the conditions cost more up front and are cheaper over any reasonable timeframe.

7. Do outdoor lights need their own circuit?

Sometimes. A few fittings can usually go on an existing circuit, but a larger installation, or anything with a run out to a shed, pool area or the far end of a yard, is often better on a dedicated circuit. Anything outdoors needs correct weatherproofing and protection regardless. We’ll tell you which applies before quoting.

8. How much does outdoor lighting cost?

It depends mostly on the cable runs rather than the fittings. A sensor light near an existing point is a small job. Lighting a garden, running out to a deck at the back of a property, or putting in a new circuit costs more because of the trenching or cable route involved. You’ll always get a fixed price after we’ve looked at the property.
