When it was built

Austinville started as a Depression relief scheme. In June 1933 forty men left Brisbane to cut access roads and subdivide the valley; a school opened on 23 June 1934 and around 50 small homes went up, with roughly 200 acres put under bananas alongside tobacco and cotton. It was named for W.H. Austin, the Under Secretary who died weeks before the announcement. The population peaked near 200 and by 1939 most families had left. Almost nothing of that settlement remains, so the houses standing today went up one at a time over the decades since, each wired to whatever the standard was that year, with sheds and additions bolted on by owners afterwards. There is no suburb-wide rule of thumb to apply here. That is exactly why we test a board rather than guess its age from the street.
