What Compliant Actually Means:

Four requirements, all of which have to be met.

The alarms must be photoelectric and compliant with AS 3786:2014, which rules out the older ionisation type. They must be interconnected, so that when one detects smoke every alarm in the dwelling sounds.

They must be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery. And they must be less than 10 years old, measured from the manufacture date printed on the alarm, because detection performance degrades whether or not the unit still beeps.

Placement is prescribed: in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the storey, and on every storey of the dwelling.

From 1 January 2027, every home, townhouse and unit in Queensland must have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms complying with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014. “Interconnected” means when one alarm sounds, they all sound. This already applies to new builds and homes being sold or leased – but by 2027 it’s mandatory for all dwellings, including owner-occupied homes. We supply and install fully compliant systems.
Under Queensland law, interconnected photoelectric alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey – even if there’s no bedroom on that level. Photoelectric alarms detect smoke from smouldering, slow-burning fires (the type most common in homes at night) and respond faster to that smoke. Ionisation alarms react to fast-flaming fires but are prone to false alarms and are no longer compliant for QLD requirements. Queensland law now mandates photoelectric alarms, which is exactly what we supply and install.
Both are legal in Queensland provided they’re photoelectric, interconnected and meet AS 3786-2014. Hardwired alarms run off mains power with a battery backup; wireless units use non-removable 10-year lithium batteries and interconnect via radio frequency. Hardwiring suits homes with ceiling access, while wireless is ideal for retrofits. We’ll recommend the best fit for your home and budget.
Smoke alarms must be replaced at least every 10 years, or sooner if they fail a test, won’t respond when cleaned, or show a fault. The manufacture date is printed on the unit. If yours are undated or over a decade old, they’re due for replacement – and it’s the ideal time to upgrade to a fully compliant interconnected system before the 2027 deadline.
Yes. In Queensland, homes being sold, leased or having leases renewed already require interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms – you can’t wait until 2027 if you’re transacting now. Hardwired smoke alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician in Queensland – it’s electrical work, and DIY is illegal under the Electrical Safety Act.
