Where QLD Law Actually Sits:

Safety switches have been mandatory in newly built or extended Queensland homes since 1992, and compulsory on both power point and lighting circuits in new homes since 2000.

Three obligations catch people out.

Selling: the seller must give written notice stating whether an approved safety switch is installed for the general-purpose socket outlets, and a buyer of a property without one must have a safety switch installed on the power point circuits within 90 days of transfer.

Leasing: owners of domestic rental accommodation must have one installed for socket outlet circuits, with fines of up to $1,500 for non-compliance.

Everyone: the Electrical Safety Office recommends pressing the test button every three months. We can handle the install, the test, or both.

Here are a list of common questions we get asked by our Gold Coast Homeowners and Businesses

1. How often do RCDs need to be tested?

It depends on the environment, and AS/NZS 3760 sets different intervals for different settings – a standard office is tested less frequently than a construction site or a workshop. There are also two separate tests: a push-button test done more often, and a full trip-time test with a meter done less often. We’ll confirm the interval that applies to your building and put it on a schedule so it isn’t left to memory.

2. Isn't pressing the test button enough?

No. The button confirms the mechanism moves, not that the device disconnects within the required time under an actual earth fault. RCDs degrade with age and can operate slowly enough to be non-compliant while still appearing to work. Trip-time testing with a meter is the only way to know, and it’s what gets recorded.

3. Who is responsible for RCD testing in a commercial building?

The person conducting the business or undertaking – the employer, business owner or building manager, depending on the arrangement. Under WHS obligations that responsibility doesn’t transfer to the electrician who did the last test. What you can transfer is the tracking, which is the part that usually slips.

4. What do you actually record?

Each device individually, with its location, its rated tripping current and the measured trip time, not just a pass or fail. That matters because a device tripping near the limit is still compliant today and worth watching. You get the record in writing after every visit.

5. What happens if an RCD fails the test?

We’ll tell you on the spot and quote a fixed price to replace it. A failed RCD isn’t a wait-and-see item – it means the circuit has no earth leakage protection until it’s changed. Replacements are usually straightforward, and we carry common devices.

6. Do I legally need safety switches in Queensland?

Yes. Queensland requires safety switches on power and lighting circuits, and they’re mandatory when a property is sold or leased. Many older Gold Coast buildings have partial coverage or none at all, which is both a safety issue and a compliance one.

7. Can testing be done without shutting the building down?

Mostly. Testing an RCD trips the circuit it protects, so we work through them in sequence and time anything disruptive around your operations. For buildings running critical equipment we’ll schedule out of hours. Nothing goes off without you knowing first.

8. Do you test RCDs in strata and body corporate buildings?

Yes, including common property switchboards, plant rooms and shared areas. Body corporate work runs the same way as everything else – fixed price agreed before work starts, quoted so a committee can approve it, and a written record afterwards for the building’s compliance file.
